Hammond Church Rd - Silt fence with temporary and permanent grassing

Hammond Church Rd was an erosion control and grassing support project in Lyons, Georgia, completed with Toombs County. The work took place southeast of Lyons on the dirt road connecting SR 178 and US HWY 280, alongside a local paving project. Our part of the job stayed focused on the basics that keep a roadway project moving: keeping sediment in place during construction and stabilizing disturbed ground as areas were ready to be finished.

Project setting and goals

Road work creates exposed soil in small sections and in short windows, and that exposure can change quickly as equipment traffic, grading, and weather move through the corridor. On Hammond Church Rd, the need was straightforward. Controls had to be in place early enough to help manage runoff and capture sediment, and vegetation had to be established as soon as the site conditions allowed. That combination supported the paving work without letting erosion become the next problem to solve.

Phased field approach

This project followed a simple sequence that matched how roadway work actually progressed. We installed silt fence first, then returned for temporary grassing, and later came back again for permanent grassing. Each step lined up with what the site looked like at the time. When soil was actively being disturbed, perimeter and flow-control measures helped keep sediment contained. When areas started to settle down, temporary cover reduced exposed ground. As final grades and edges were ready, permanent grassing provided longer-term stabilization.

Hydroseeding and sod were used as the grassing methods. Hydroseeding allowed seed to be applied in a consistent layer across disturbed ground, and sod provided immediate cover where quicker surface protection made sense. Together, those methods helped build vegetation in stages instead of waiting for the entire corridor to be ready at once.

Work performed on site

During the erosion control phase, we met up with one of our crews while they installed CPOP (compost filter sock) to support the paving work. CPOP served as a perimeter and flow-control measure, helping slow runoff and capture sediment before it moved off disturbed areas. The install was part of the early protection needed for an active jobsite, with follow-up visits planned as the project advanced from earth disturbance toward final stabilization.

Scope of services

  • Silt fence installation, including CPOP used as a perimeter and flow-control measure
  • Temporary grassing to establish short-term cover during construction
  • Permanent grassing to stabilize the site as work neared completion
  • Hydroseeding and sod placement used to help establish vegetation

Closeout and stabilization

The order of operations mattered on Hammond Church Rd. Early erosion control measures provided a line of defense while equipment and traffic activity continued around the work area. Temporary grassing reduced the amount of bare soil during the remaining construction window. Permanent grassing finished the stabilization work once final grades and edges were in place. Across each phase, the outcome stayed consistent: soil stayed where it belonged, runoff was managed more effectively, and the roadway improvements reached the finish with stable, vegetated ground in place. This was practical field work that supported safer, cleaner progress and helped protect adjacent areas as the project moved toward completion.
